I mostly agree with ChatGPT’s generated responses about Dalcroze. Point 3 about Music and Movement Games is largely accurate because as we have experienced in the Dalcroze Tasting workshop, interactive activities are very useful for engaging the participants because of the nature of the games. Usually, outreach activities for the elderly are held in their care centres or old folks’ homes. By playing games together, it encourages the elderly to interact with each other. The pace of the game can also be adjusted according to the elderly’s reaction times. Music and movement games also stimulate the elderly’s cognitive abilities because they need to make the correct movements at the correct times, hence the elderly need to actively participate in the game.
In addition, I believe point 5 about sensory stimulation is also rather applicable to elderly outreach activities. Due to their ailing health and declining hearing, the elderly may not be as responsive towards the music played during the outreach session. Hence, it is important to engage their other senses so that interest in the activities can still be maintained. For example, in Ms Rachel Ho’s sharing, she mentioned how she kept the elderly engaged in music-making sessions not only by singing but also by tapping rhythms using chopsticks. She also talked about letting the elderly use tactile materials such as scarves as part of their performance. I believe that this helps allow all elderly to participate equally in the process of music-making, regardless of their musical background and musical abilities.
However, I disagree with ChatGPT’s point about improvisation, which claims to “[foster] creativity and musical expression while boosting confidence and self-esteem”. Although improvisation does allow the elderly to express themselves freely without restrictions, it could be difficult to coax them to take the first step because they may be shy or unwilling to participate. In Mr Gabriel Lee’s lesson, we learnt the importance of addressing the needs of the community as well as engaging them in a meaningful way. Hence, it is important to have a good facilitator who is patient and able to assist the elderly with their needs while also maximising the benefits of music-making.
In conclusion, I believe that ChatGPT has made valid points in its explanation of Dalcroze Eurhythmics, most of which we have experienced in the Dalcroze Tasting class. However, it still has space for improvement in terms of making these concepts and experiences suitable for the elderly in music outreach activities.
